Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)

Just to remind you, Our Throwback Thursday features a favorite song, something about the song and a cover version of the song. One of the songs that defined MTV in the 80s, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by the Eurythmics in 1983, gave them their only US chart topper.

In a 2007 New York Times interview, Annie Lennox recalled that this was written by the duo just after they'd had a bitter fight. "I thought it was the end of the road and that was that," she said. "We were trying to write, and I was miserable. And he just went, well, 'I'll do this anyway.' " Dave Stewart came up with a beat, Annie Lennox improvised the synthesizer riff, and suddenly they realized they had a potential hit.

In 1978, Squeeze had a UK hit with Take Me I'm Yours, which features the line "Dreams are made of this" in the chorus.

I could have gone with a number of covers but I had to go with the Marilyn Manson version and it's demented  video.

Marilyn Manson recorded the song in 1995, giving a much darker tone to the song. Manson has claimed that the inspiration to cover this song came from his first acid trip. In Manson's auto-biography, he related to this song by mentioning that he met people who wanted to be abused by him; and who wanted to use him as well.

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (157)

ACME would like to wishes all of their friends and family a happy and healthy New Year!

Gong Xi Fa Cai

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Bugs Bunny Merrie Melodies cartoon, the 1949 Robert McKimson directed, Rebel Rabbit:

The Southern Congressman that says "This hare must die!" and Bugs Bunny's comeback "It's a joke, son, ya missed it!" is a reference to a catchphrase of Senator Claghorn, a movie character played by Kenny Delmar. Senator Claghorn inspired Foghorn Leghorn, and to some degree, Yosemite Sam. Financier and political consultant Bernard Baruch was famous for spending time on park benches in New York and Washington, an exceptionally obscure reference by today's standards.

In celebration of the Lunar New Year, today's episode of The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour is sponsored by Nike:

Remember, Nike: taking respect to another level.

The Lunar New Year, among other things, is about spending time with your loved one, The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour can think of no better way to spend time with them than watching the 1978 Jackie Chan classic, The Drunken Master, (remember that Jackie performed most of those himself without stuntmen or special effects, something that is rarely seen in modern cinema.) So slam down you last mahjong tile, get comfortable and enjoy the film.

Jackie Chan (Wong Fei-Hung) nearly lost an eye when Jang Lee Hwang (Jim Ti-Sam) kicked him in the head during the final fight scene. When Hwang became aware of this, he refused to do more takes for the shot.

Life on Mars?

Just to remind you, Our Throwback Thursday features a favorite song, something about the song and a cover version of the song. The song today is David Bowie's 1973 classic, Life on Mars -

Bowie has labeled the song "a sensitive young girl's reaction to the media" and added, "I think she finds herself disappointed with reality... that although she's living in the doldrums of reality, she's being told that there's a far greater life somewhere, and she's bitterly disappointed that she doesn't have access to it."

Bowie came up with this after he was asked to put English lyrics to a French song called Comme d'habitude. Paul Anka ultimately bought the rights to the original French song and rewrote it in English as My Way, later made famous by Frank Sinatra. Life On Mars? uses practically the same chords as My Way and the Hunky Dory linear notes state that the song is "inspired by Frankie."

I had a tough time choosing just one cover version of the song. The song was recorded in Portuguese by Seu Jorge for the soundtrack of the 2004 film The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. Anni-Frid Lyngstad, formerly of ABBA, recorded a Swedish version titled Liv pa Mars? The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain often performs this song at live shows. Even Jessica Lange got into the act. But I went with Chris Martin and Jimmy Fallon's heartfelt tribute to David Bowie after his death in 2016.

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (156)

Thank you for joining us today.

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Bugs Bunny Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1949 Mississippi Hare, directed by Chuck Jones.

Although not considered part of the "Censored Eleven", this cartoon has been mostly unavailable on TV for years, due to it's negative racial overtones.

The inmates in the programming department of The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour have been watching a slew of movies to showcase this year. We came across one that several of them had never seen before - the 1937 film, Angel, a completely forgotten Ernst Lubitsch/ Marlene Dietrich collaboration which spelled the end of Dietrich career at Paramount, (It's a worthy curiosity that you show watch.) So we would like you to relax (quick, find the most comfortable seat on the sofa,) get a snack (perhaps, some gougeres,) and a beverage (a champagne cocktail?) and join The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour in watching this forgotten little gem, Angel,

At the time, the film was a failure at the box office. Several of Marlene Dietrich's most recent films had flopped at the box office. She was deemed 'box office poison,' and her seven-year contract with Paramount was cancelled, (within two years, her career would be revived with the 1939 western-comedy Destry Rides Again.) Unfortunately, audiences saw it was a Lubitsch film and assumed it was a comedy. The film clearly is not and was one of the director's only dramas, expresses his (and probably Dietrich's) emotions about the coming changes in Europe.

Mr. Blue Sky

Ok, we're trying something different.
Every Thursday we're going to feature a favorite song, something about the song and a cover version of the song. Our first song is the 1977 ELO classic, Mr. Blue Skies -

The song plays during the opening credits of the 2017 movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in what director James Gunn called "the most hugely insane shot I've ever done." Like the first film, the soundtrack is made up of '70s hits that Chris Pratt's character plays throughout on a Walkman.

Polyphonics is a great site that covers all things music - I highly recommend you take a deep dive into their catalogs of videos.

I chose an interesting cover version of the song, (Not Weezer's 2019 faithful cover of the song,) the re-interpretion of the song by Postmodern Jukebox, featuring Allison Young. (Don't spend too much time on the Postmodern Jukebox site, you might be there for a while.)

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (155)

Thank you for joining us today.

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Bugs Bunny Merrie Melodies cartoon, the 1949 Hare Do directed by Friz Freleng.

Look for it: A billboard is visible in the background with the message "Try Friz - the wonder soap - at every grocery!".

January 11, 1940 -
If you're like to most of us, you're probably taking down your holiday decorations today, (unlike my sister, who leaves her tree up the entire year - don't ask.) The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour programming department wants to help you along with your task at hand. On this date, Columbia Pictures released the fast paced Howard Hawks' comedy His Girl Friday. We figured, why not watch the flick and take the tree down. So, as well always encourage you,  sit back and relax (quick, find the most comfortable seat on the sofa,) get a snack (perhaps, some potato chips,) and a beverage and join The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour in watching His Girl Friday.

The film finished shooting seven days behind schedule. The delays were caused by the complexity of shooting the rapid-fire dialogue, which had to be carefully timed with business and movement. The restaurant scene in which Burns takes Hildy and Bruce to lunch took four days to shoot. The original schedule had only allotted two days for the scene.

If you take no risks, you win no victories.

It's the birthday of the 37th President of the United States, Richard Milhous Nixon, (born in Yorba Linda, California) on this date in 1913. He had a childhood full of tragedy and disappointment.

When Nixon was 12, his older brother had a vision of young Dick's future and got a headache that turned out to be meningitis. He died a month later. Nixon said that he cried for weeks afterward. A few years later, Nixon's other brother caught tuberculosis and spent five years in a cut-rate sanitarium before he died. The cost of his treatment drained the family's resources, and Nixon had to turn down a partial scholarship to Harvard. He did get a full scholarship to Duke Law School, but he had to live in a one-room shotgun shack with no plumbing or electricity. He was forced to shave in the women's room of the Duke University library and bathe in a local bird bath.

Nixon's luck only began to change when he decided to join the military during World War II. Although raised a Quaker - morals never seemed to stand in his way. Nixon was interested in politics, and he knew that military service would look good on his résumé. One of the many things he learned in the military (besides compiling lists of his enemies) was that he was a fantastic cheat at poker. By the end of the war, he had earned almost $10,000. When he got back to civilian life, he used that money to fund his first political campaign.

He managed to win his first election for Congress, and he served as vice president under Dwight Eisenhower. Eisenhower suffered from heart problems and Nixon would try to entertain the ailing President by jumping out from behind the furniture shooting, "Boo" or "Oh My God, the Communists have begun bombing New Haven". Nixon was defeated for the presidency by John F. Kennedy in 1960 due in part to a perceived lack of personal hygiene. Then, in 1962, he lost a campaign for governor of California, and suddenly it seemed like his career was over. But just six years later, he was elected president of the United States.

His policies as president were surprisingly liberal by today's standards. He began arms control agreements with the Soviet Union and eased relations with China. He established the Environmental Protection Agency, expanded Social Security and state welfare programs, and he tried to create a national health insurance system.

The Watergate investigations eventually forced Nixon to resign in 1974. At his last meeting with his Cabinet in 1974, Nixon burst into tears.

He told them, "Always give your best, never get discouraged, never be petty. Always remember, others may hate you, but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself."

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (154)

Thank you for joining us today.

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Bugs Bunny Merry Melodies cartoon, the 1948 My Bunny Lies over the Sea, directed by Chuck Jones.

Please note: The title is an obvious play on the second line of the old song, My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean.

January 4, 1967 -
Welcome to the first weekend of 2020. Most of the staff of The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour have sobered up enough for us to pot together a show this evening. On this date, the Doors released their eponymous debut album The Doors. The album features their breakthrough single Light My Fire and the lengthy song The End with its Oedipal spoken word section. The album was recorded at Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood, California over six days and unique packaging of the album included each band members bio. So why not sit back and relax (quick, find the most comfortable seat on the sofa,) get a snack (perhaps, some popcorn,) and a beverage and join The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour in listening to the Doors (by all means, smoke 'em. if you got 'em.) -
