Thank you for joining us today.
Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with not one but two 'Fat Elmer'/ Bugs Bunny Looney Tunes cartoon, both from 1942, Bob Clampett directed, The Wacky Wabbit, and Any Bonds Today? (another of the infamous 'Censored Eleven' cartoons, due to Bugs appearing in blackface.):
Once again for this cartoon, Elmer was redesigned as a fat man (based on voice actor Arthur Q. Bryan's own physique) in an attempt to make him funnier. The 'Fat Elmer' would only make four more appearances -The Wabbit Who Came to Supper, Wabbit Trouble, Fresh Hare, and Any Bonds Today? - before returning to the slimmer form by which he is better known. This cartoon was the only time, though, that the Fat Elmer also had a red nose. Much like Wabbit Twouble also directed by Bob Clampett the previous year, this cartoon features Bugs as the aggressor provoking Elmer for no apparent reason.
Bob Clampett directed the film, which started production in late November 1941 and was completed eight days after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
On March 9, 1987, U2 release their fifth studio album on this date - The Joshua Tree. It would become their first number one album, producing two number one hits, and win the band their first two Grammy awards. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like to celebrate the anniversary is classic album. (The famous tree died of natural causes in 2000, collapsing on the desert floor at an estimated age of 200 years old.) So please sit back (quick, find the most comfortable seat on the sofa,) get a snack and a beverage and join The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour in listen to this 1987 materpiece.
The idea of using a Joshua Tree photo came from photographer Anton Corbijn, who suggested a trip through the Mojave Desert to take pictures. Bono liked the name so much it became the album title. Corbijn recounts that Bono consulted a Bible and was taken by how the tree got its name from Mormon settlers who thought its limbs reminded them of a Biblical story of Joshua lifting his hands in prayer.
U2 went on a world-wide promotion of the album, Joshua Tree Tour. The Joshua Tree Tour sold out stadiums around the world, the first time the band had consistently played large arena. Today, the ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like to present the November 18th Los Angeles portion of the tour.
The Joshua Tree and its singles had become huge hits and the band had reached a new height in their popularity. Tickets for shows were often very hard to get, especially on the first American leg when they only played in arenas. This evening concert has the most tickets sales with the gross revenues for their two day event at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum of $2,590,457. -
