ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (446)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Porky Pig Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1937 Porky's Badtime Story (co[starring Gabby Goat), directed by Ub Iwerks, Bob Clampett, and Chuck Jones .

The original title to this short was It Happened All Night (a pun on the 1934 screwball comedy It Happened One Night), but was changed due to the Hays Office finding it too risque.

Before the start of our feature presentation, the staff of The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like to honor the fantastic comic Robert Klein -

I wonder if you can still buy from him every record ever recorded!. And is he still offering a free ice crusher!

We’ve selected another entry from the excellent reference book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, edited by Steven Jay Schneider. Today’s film is the 1978 Hong Kong martial arts mystery Five Deadly Venoms, a genre classic directed and co-written by the legendary Chang Cheh and produced by Runme Shaw for the iconic Shaw Brothers Studio. The film stars Chiang Sheng, Lu Feng, Sun Chien, Philip Kwok, Wai Pak, and Lo Mang - actors who would go on to be affectionately known by fans as the "Venom Mob." Five Deadly Venoms is widely regarded as one of the most influential and beloved martial arts films of its era. Blending intricate fight choreography with a whodunit plot structure, the film centers around a dying martial arts master who sends his last student on a mission to track down five of his former pupils - each trained in a distinct and deadly kung fu style: Centipede, Snake, Scorpion, Lizard, and Toad. Over time, it became a touchstone for fans of martial arts cinema and an enduring cult classic. Its influence extended far beyond film: the movie has been referenced extensively in hip-hop, most notably by the Wu-Tang Clan, whose members cite it as a foundational inspiration for their music, personas, and overall aesthetic. RZA, in particular, has paid tribute to the film in numerous interviews, sampling its dialogue and themes in his productions. Fun fact: The music used during the film’s first fight scene also appears in an entirely different context - Monty Python and the Holy Grail - highlighting the eclectic and often recycled nature of soundtrack libraries in 1970s cinema. So join us here at the ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour. Sit back, get comfortable, and enjoy tonight’s feature presentation: Five Deadly Venoms.

The film's legacy has even reached into the world of animation. In DreamWorks' Kung Fu Panda, the supporting cast includes the Furious Five - anthropomorphic martial artists representing traditional animal styles: Crane, Tigress, Mantis, Monkey, and Viper. In the DVD commentary, the filmmakers openly acknowledge that these characters were inspired by the Five Deadly Venoms, a testament to the film’s lasting impact across generations and genres.

A few quick thoughts

1.) Everyone isn't doing it - other drugs are so much cheaper.
2.) Not for nothing, but the actor was too healthy to be a real junky
3.) I didn't look closely enough, but I'm assuming that if he had that violent reaction to his fix, it would have happened quick suddenly, and his rig would have been visible.
But hey, that's just the opinion of your old doctor and I've been drink formalehide since I was 14.

ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (445)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Porky Pig Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1937 Porky's Super Service, directed by Ub Iwerks, Bob Clampett, and Chuck Jones .

This is the final time Bob Clampett and Chuck Jones are assistant directors together and the final time Clampett was an assistant director. This is due to Ub Iwerks's subcontract with Warner Bros. Cartoons coming to an end, although he got a similar subcontract at Screen Gems.

Before the start of our feature presentation, the staff of The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like to take a moment to mourn the following announcements made the other night

To paraphrase Charles De Gaulle - Honor, common sense, and the superior interest of the Nation command to all the people to continue fighting wherever they are and however they can. So remember bunkies, Resistance is a duty

We've selected another entry from the excellent reference book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today’s film is the 1978 drama The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, directed by Fred Schepisi and starring Tom E. Lewis, Freddy Reynolds, Ray Barrett, and Bryan Brown. The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, based on an actual incident, was critically well received but a financial failure upon its initial release. The film’s disappointing box office performance left Schepisi disillusioned about the state of filmmaking in Australia, and he soon left for Hollywood, only returning to make another film in Australia a decade later. This remains one of the key Australian films of the 1970s, as it directly challenged the myth that there was no Aboriginal resistance to white settlement in the country. While the film has since gone on to receive international acclaim, it has also prompted an ongoing ethical debate: is it morally justifiable for white filmmakers to tell Aboriginal stories? So join us here at the ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour, sit back, get comfortable, and enjoy tonight’s feature: The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith.

When first classified by the Australian Film Censorship Board, this film garnered an R-rating, restricted to persons 18+ and over. The rating was appealed, and the Australian Films Board of Review over-turned this rating and the film was re-classified with an M rating, suitable for persons 15+ and over.

ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (444)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Porky Pig Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1937 Porky's Building, directed by Frank Tashlin. .

The City Building Commissioner's name is Sandy C. Ment (Sandy Cement) - Sand and cement are basic materials used in commercial building construction.

Before the start of our feature presentation, the staff of The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like to watch with you another song from Puddles Pity Party:

It was an interesting choice. I'm sure he is aware of the Judy Garland version.

We've selected another entry from the excellent reference book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today’s film is the 1978 drama Days of Heaven, directed by Terrence Malick and starring Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepard, and Linda Manz. Days of Heaven received good reviews when it was first released, and has since gone on to be regarded as one of the finest films of the decade. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful films ever made. Days of Heaven plays almost like an essay on loneliness - a melancholy poem on loss and love. So join us here at The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour: sit back, get comfortable, and enjoy tonight’s feature - Days of Heaven.

The making of Days of Heaven was quite grueling. Cinematographer Néstor Almendros was going blind during production. Before each shot, he would have his assistant take a picture with a Polaroid camera, which he then viewed under a high-powered magnifying glass. Terrence Malick was so exhausted by the experience of making and completing the film that he left for Paris. It would be twenty years before he directed another.

Looking back, there you were and here we are

I , unexpectedly, find myself in, as Otello says ... in a melting mood. Time, like a bandit in the night, has crept up upon me -

It’s the 26h anniversary of my 39th Birthday (Thank you Mr. Benny). This was very strange year for me (those of you who know me, know why. Among other things, I'm facing yet another surgery.) As always, I'm very happy you Bunkies have decided to join me in the annual review of my Desert Island Discs selections, Godzilla’s Atoll LPs, brought to you by ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (and Toho Studios.) As I'm sure you remember, ACME’s in-house law firm, Hungerdunger, Hungerdunger, Hungerdunger, Hungerdunger and McCormick (and don’t be like Jamison and leave out the most important Hungerdunger,) urged me to avoid copyright issues with the BBC, and encouraged this partnership.)

(In case you’ve never heard of the BBC show Desert Island Disc – people are asked what music they would bring with them if they were stranded on an island for an indefinite period of time.

Here are the rules:

1.) You make choose 8 pieces of music and tell me why you chose them.
2.) You then get to choose one book to take with you (you automatically get to take the Complete Works of Shakespeare and either the Bible or another appropriate religious or philosophical work.)
3.) You get to choose one luxury, which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside. (You can cheat here – since you can listen to music, there is some form of electric, so you may have refrigeration for your luxury item.)

There is nothing profound or deep in my Godzilla’s Atoll LP choices – they’re just songs that I like (in no particular order)

Us and Them – Pink Floyd

I'm repeating myself - but what the hell, it's my birthday, I remembered Pink Floyd and this is one of my favorite songs – but I think that choosing your favorite Pink Floyd cut is like choosing you favorite kid. This is one of the first songs I ever slow danced with Mrs. Dr. Caligari (and I knew that I loved her,) a very long time ago. Do kids still slow dance? They should. So why wouldn't I remember that.

Werewolves Of London – Warren Zevon

This year I chose a different Zevon song. I think this could be one of the first songs I recognized as his. SOS and Godzilla are getting me a Lee Ho Fook's t-shirt for my birthday but I'm not supposed to know that.

Innocent When You Dream - Tom Waits

I love Tom Waits but some of his songs really hit me very hard. I now know that when I'm drunk, Tom Waits is playing in my head, so I assume I'll be hearing this a lot if I'm stranded on an island.

Every Day is Like Sunday - The Smiths

Usually I feel like The Smiths is the band I go to to energize myself, but this year this is the perfect song to express my feelings. I would listen to this every day but I know when I stood

Autumn Leaves – Rickie Lee Jones

Without realizing, I almost picked last years choice, Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying. This is a favorite song of mine (please check out Iggy Pop's version,)and she is one of my favorite performers. While she has many fantastic original songs, she is a wonderful interpreters of other people's material. This song put me into a cocktail lounge mood. Being on a desert island I had better be in a cocktail mood.

Gaucho – Steely Dan

My annual dilemma, choosing the Steely Dan cut. I’ve often said that I probably don’t need a Steely Dan song; I could call them up at will in my mind. Just thinking about the title of this song brings the entire album mind.

Watching the Detectives – Elvis Costello

I have so much trouble with this choice: I nearly went with my old stand by Shipbuilding (I can’t believe Elvis actually wrote this with Sinatra in mind,) but switched gears and decided to go with a big early hit. It’s nearly impossible to appreciate the long lasting career of the brilliant Mr. MacManus.

Concerto for a Rainy Day – ELO

I was going to pick Billy Joel's Scene's from an Italian Restaurant but at the moment that's just a little too on the nose for some. I love ELO and I actually don't think I've picked on of their songs before. I can remember when I saw them as the opening act for Boston. I've always loved this song and it will remind me of their entire catalogue.

The book I’d take with me would be Gravity's Raibow by Thomas Pynchon.
Once again, it would be the second time I would have read the book in almost 40 years. I will be curious to see how it strikes me all these years later.

As always, the luxury item would be a refrigerator full of Bombay Sapphire (and maybe, tub of kalamata olivies.)

so that’s eight songs (and that’s all you’re allowed.) This year I feel ok with my choices. I’ll try to get marooned again next year for my birthday, and see how I do.

And so it goes

ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (443)

Thank you for taking time out of your holiday weekend to join us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Porky Pig Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1937 Porky & Gabby, (co-starring Gabby, ) directed by Ub Iwerks, Bob Clampett, and Chuck Jones. .

This is the first time Bob Clampett and Chuck Jones are assistant directors. Eventually after Ub Iwerks left Warner Bros. Cartoons, Clampett took his place as director and eventually would work for the studio to direct more Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts up until his departure in 1945, while Jones stayed as an assistant director after Clampett took over Iwerks' unit until Porky's Poppa in 1938 and eventually became a director himself later on in 1938 after Frank Tashlin's departure.

As you may be aware, we love video mashups. Well, before the start of our feature presentation, the staff of The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like to watch with you, what we believe is one of the best mashup videos that we've ever seen, created by kaptainkristian - The Last 100 Years in 100 Films.

It's a quite dark view of the past 100 years but then again, it's been an increasingly dark time. (A full list of the movies used in this mashup can be found in the video description.)

We've selected another entry from the excellent reference book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is the 1977 Dutch drama Soldier of Orange (Soldaat van Oranje), directed and co-written by Paul Verhoeven and starring Rutger Hauer and Jeroen Krabbé. Though not an epic in the traditional Hollywood sense, Verhoeven delivers a powerful and sweeping wartime drama based on the memoir of Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema. Soldier of Orange was both the most expensive Dutch film made in 1977 and the most viewed. Despite being essentially an independent production (and in some ways a road movie), it achieved international success. However, American audiences at the time found aspects of the film unsettling. As a nation unaccustomed to foreign occupation or war on its own soil, viewers were often disturbed by the film's unflinching portrayal of Dutch resistance fighters. These characters carry out summary executions of known collaborators - sometimes people they had known personally - without hesitation. Their moral clarity reflects the grim realities of occupation, even if their actions weigh heavily on them. So join us here at The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour, sit back, get comfortable, and enjoy tonight’s feature Soldier of Orange.

Producer Rob Houwer created a heavily re-edited version of the film for the international market - without Paul Verhoeven’s knowledge or consent. This cut, re-titled Survival Run, trimmed nearly an hour of footage, stripping the story of exposition and historical nuance, and featured British actors dubbing with absurd European accents. Houwer reportedly preferred this version and intended it to be the primary international release. Had it been, Verhoeven’s chances of breaking through internationally might have been ruined. Fortunately, film festival programmer Dan Ireland - already a fan of Verhoeven’s earlier work - screened the original version and was so impressed that he shared it with Steven Spielberg. As a result, the American distributor requested the original cut, which went on to receive a Golden Globe nomination. Verhoeven has since credited Ireland with saving his career in the United States.
