Dr. Caligari's cabinet is now so crammed that he had to stow stuff in the Cupboard. Time may wound all heels but once in a while you need a cup of tea.

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (278)
Thank you for joining us today
Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Merrie Melodies cartoon, the 1938 Daffy Duck in Hollywood, directed by Tex Avery.
Wonder Studios is a direct parody of Warner Bros. Even the caption "If it's a good picture, it's a Wonder" parodies the famous marketing slogan.
Your pals at The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like to place this tidbit in your memory bank, so you may draw upon it whenever you need a spark of joy -
Watch this inspired mashup of a clip from Dirty Dancing and The Muppet Show theme. Enjoy it now. Recall it fondly later.
We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is a film no one on the staff was familiar with, the 1958 crime drama Cairo Station (Bab al-Hadid,) directed by Youssef Chahine. Cairo Station is a gripping character study which distinctly combines stark social realism with genre styles. The film is one part social commentary in the vein of Italian neorealism, one part lighthearted comedy, and one part psychosexual horror. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching this relatively unknown film, Cairo Station . So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.
When the 82-year-old filmmaker died in 2008 he had directed almost fifty features, documentaries, and shorts. His style was eclectic, influenced by everything from Hollywood musicals and horror movies to film noir and Italian neorealism. The great neorealist directors inspired him in much the same way they inspired the great Indian auteur Satyajit Ray, who made his exquisite Apu Trilogy around the same time Chahine was making Cairo Station.

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (277)
Thank you for joining us today
Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1938 The Daffy Doc (co-starring Porky Pig,) directed by Bob Clampett.
(Sorry, this is a slightly edited version.) Both Bob Clampett and Chuck Jones grew to hate this short due to it using an iron lung for a gag prop, which they felt was in bad taste to those who suffered from polio.
It's graduation season again, before our feature presention,The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching a fun Commencement speech mash-up from NPR -
So remember, keep reaching for the stars and follow your dreams!
We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is one of the most famous Polish films, the 1958 World War II drama Ashes and Diamonds (Popiól i Diament,) directed by Andrzej Wajda and starring Zbigniew Cybulski and Ewa Krzyzewska. Ashes and Diamonds is considered by film critics to be one of the great masterpieces of Polish cinema and arguably the finest Polish realist film. Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola have cited the film as one of their favourites. Because of the film's nihilistic tone, the Polish authorities were not keen on it being exhibited outside of the country. Until a low-level official had a print shipped out to the Venice Film Festival where it played to great acclaim. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching this important film, Ashes and Diamonds. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.
Citizen Kane - and Gregg Toland's cinematography in particular - was a huge influence on Andrzej Wajda at the time. Like Toland, the first thing the film's cinematographer Jerzy Wójcik did was convince production designer Roman Mann to include ceilings in all the sets.

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (276)
Thank you for joining us today
Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1938 Porky and Daffy (co-starring Porky Pig,) directed by Bob Clampett.
The idea of an outside power turning someone into a crazy but skilled fighter has been also seen in several Three Stooges shorts, all involving Curly Howard.
Before our feature presention,The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching another heavyset, middle-aged man be amusing -
I think everyone really misses John
We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is Alfred Hitchcock's macabre film noir masterpiece, the amazing Vertigo, starring Jimmy Stewart, Kim Novak, Barbara Bel Geddes, Tom Helmore, and Henry Jones. Although it received a lukewarm reception upon its release, Vertigo is now commonly ranked among the greatest movies ever made. The film, by Hitchcock's own accounts, is his most personal picture, digging deep into what are said to have been some of the director's own darkest thoughts: obsessions with women, the desire to control them, and to mold them into a personal ideal. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching this deeply disturbing but brilliant film, Vertigo. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.
The costume designer and Hitchcock worked together to give Madeline's clothing an eerie appearance. Her trademark gray suit was chosen for its color because they thought it seemed odd for a blonde woman to be wearing all gray. Also, they added the black scarf to her white coat because of the odd contrast.

Thank you for joining us today
Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1938 What Price Porky (co-starring Porky Pig,) directed by Bob Clampett.
This is the first Daffy Duck cartoon directed by Bob Clampett. Also, it's the first time Bob Clampett directed a short without Chuck Jones or any assistant directors with him.

I've been listening to a lot of Patton while I've been recuperating
We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is Orson Welles' late studio film, the remarkable Touch of Evil, starring Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Joseph Calleia, Akim Tamiroff, Marlene Dietrich and Orson Welles. Initially dismissed by film critics, Touch of Evil found popularity among European audiences and won top awards at the 1958 Brussels World Film Festival. During the 1970s, its reputation was renewed and it is now widely regarded as one of Welles' best motion pictures and one of the best classic-era films noir. In 1998, Walter Murch, working from all available material, re-edited the film based on a famous 58 page memo Orson Welles wrote after seeing the studio re-edit of his film. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching this great film, Touch of Evil. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.
The opening scene took an entire night to get right, mainly because the actor playing the customs officer kept blowing his lines. It was beginning to get light on the horizon when Orson Welles made the final take of the night, saying to the cast, "All right, let's try it one more time." Then he looked at the actor and said, "If you forget your line this time, just move your lips and we'll dub it in later, but please, God do NOT say, 'I'm sorry, Mr. Welles!'" This is the take seen in the film.
