Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Merrie Melodies cartoon, the 1966 Snow Excuse, {co-starring Speedy Gonzales) directed by Robert McKimson.
When Speedy attempts to break into Daffy's cabin and fails, he is holding the head of the Tasmanian Devil.

We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is the 1970 documentary, Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music , directed by Michael Wadleigh, (the editors on the film included Thelma Schoonmaker, Martin Scorsese, and Wadleigh himself,) and the performers were just about every major act form the late 1960's. In August 1969 — against the backdrop of a nation divided over sexual politics, civil rights, and the Vietnam War — half a million people converged on a small dairy farm in upstate New York to hear Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, The Who, Janis Joplin, and other music icons in a concert billed as “3 Days of Peace and Music.” The documentary of the event was an overwhelming commercial success and received critical acclaim from just about every critic upon release. The film is said to be a perfect window in the period. The version we are watching today is the 1994 director's cut, which added 18 addition performances not originally seen in the released version. So please, get yourself comfortable, roll yourself a fat one and join us in watching Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music.
When the promoters were negotiating to get Grateful Dead to perform at the festival, Bill Graham, who was managing the band at the time, insisted that the promoters include one of two other acts he managed on the bill. Michael Lang, one of the concert promoters, listened to recordings of both bands and liked them so much that he couldn't decide which one to put on the bill and wound up flipping a coin; the winner would be booked. The losing band was It's a Beautiful Day. The band that won the flip was Santana, which would achieve superstardom on the basis of their appearances at both the festival and in the movie.

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Looney Tunes short, the 1940 Calling Dr. Porky starring Porky Pig , directed by Friz Freleng.
Although Porky is supposed to be a physician, the chair in his office is actually a dentist's chair.

'Weird Al' Yankovic plays a fresh set of songs for the Tiny Desk
We’ve selected another entry from the excellent reference book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, edited by Steven Jay Schneider. Today’s film is the 1993 bio drama, The Puppetmaster, directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien, and starring Lim Giong, Li Tian-lu, and Tsai Chen-nan. The film is based on the memoirs of Li Tian-lu, Taiwan's most celebrated puppeteer.
Hou Hsiao-hsien aims to weave a personal history to counteract the usual limitations of period movies, filtering a decade-spanning account of his country’s recent past through the perspective of puppeteer Li Tien-lu, whose life story unfolds under the backdrop of almost half a century’s worth of upheaval during Taiwan’s occupation under Japan.
Having the real Li himself intermittently appear and directly narrate his story is a great device, one that helps to root it all within a firmly ground level perspective, this story eschewing big events and key players to instead focus on an ordinary man as he lives his life alongside them.
Hou attempts to take back the “official” top-heavy view of history for something more intimate; to this end, Li’s story is used as a prism through which the filmmaker can examine broader ideas, in the process providing a measured portrait of Taiwanese life under colonial rule that manages to feel quite balanced in its day-to-day focus, zeroing in on his subject to make what could have been sprawling and overstuffed instead much more focused and precise..

The film mostly covers the Japanese occupation and how the film’s protagonist worked as a puppeteer and used his skills as a folk artist to survive. It’s a fictionalized history (mixing the real with the invented) and uses other actors to portray the hero at different times of his life; it’s told in the formal style of the ancient Chinese ways of storytelling. Its vibrancy is in the filmmaking skills of master director Hou Hsiao-hsien, whose slow moving pace and long takes accent his minimalist style of directing.

This cartoon is a partial remake of The Daffy Doc, with a crazy cat replacing Daffy Duck.
THe staff at The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour ts taking the month of August off, ( I unfortunately, am stuck here in the city.) Before they left, they chose a few thing for us to watch - today it's a compilation of skits from SCTV.
This series is over 40 years old and still funny as hell.
We’ve selected another entry from the excellent reference book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, edited by Steven Jay Schneider. Today’s film is the 1992 crime drama, Reservoir Dogs directed by Quentin Tarantino, and starring Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Chris Penn, Steve Buscemi, Lawrence Tierney, Michael Madsen, Quentin Tarantino, and Edward Bunker. The film incorporates many motifs that have become Tarantino's hallmarks: violent crime, pop culture references, profanity, and nonlinear storytelling.
Armed with $30,000 and a 16mm camera, Quentin Tarantino was all set to make the film with a bunch of friends, including his producing partner Lawrence Bender, who was going to play Nice Guy Eddie. It was then that Tarantino received an answerphone message from Harvey Keitel, asking if he could not only be in the film, but help produce it. Keitel had gotten involved via the wife of Bender's acting class teacher, who had managed to get a copy of the script to him. Keitel's involvement helped raise the budget to $1.5 million.
The budget wouldn't cover police assistance for traffic control, so in the scene where Steve Buscemi forces a woman out of her car and drives off in it, he could only do so when the traffic lights were green.
To avoid alienating the film's backers, producer Lawrence Bender had the tamer scenes shot first, so that the dailies would strengthen the backers' confidence, before getting to the nasty, violent scenes.

The film's budget was so low that many of the actors were asked to simply bring their own clothing as wardrobe; most notably Chris Penn's track jacket. The signature black suits were provided for free by the designer, based on her love for the American crime film genre. Steve Buscemi wore his own black jeans instead of suit pants, and Michael Madsen wore a jacket and pants that came from two different suits.
