ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (438)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Porky Pig Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1937 Porky the Wrestler, directed by Tex Avery.

Mel Blanc is the voice of the "woo-hoo" noises. His first major appearance in a WB cartoon would not be until Picador Porky.

Before the start of our feature presentation, the staff of The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour is starting to think about what are next thematic screenings will be once we watch all of the films listed in Steven Jay Schneider's excellent book, (not that we are close to the end. But as we draw closer to more recent films listed, the less likely we will find an embeddable versions of them.) We came upon this video and it seems like a good source for some films we can watch together.

The only quibble I have is that most of these films are far from forgotten.

We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is the 1975 mystery drama Picnic at Hanging Rock, directed by Peter Weir, and starring Rachel Roberts, Dominic Guard, Helen Morse, Vivean Gray, and Jacki Weaver.. Picnic at Hanging Rock was both a commercial and critical success when it was first released. It was voted the best Australian movie of all time in a poll by the Victorian Centenary of Cinema Committee and the NFSA. The film displays both a remarkable sense of eerie foreboding and lush surrealist sensibility, which justifies it's masterpiece status. The film has been restored in 4K resolution this year. The restoration was supervised by Peter Weir himself. So just push away from the table, get ready to enjoy this feast for the eyes and join us in watching Picnic at Hanging Rock.

Even though both the movie and the book it was based on claim to be inspired by real events, the story is completely fictional. Author Joan Lindsay, who wrote the novel, enjoyed the hype that her publisher created by claiming that the story was true, so she as well never decisively confirmed or denied whether her story was based on or inspired by true events or not.

ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (437)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Porky Pig Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1936 Porky in the North Woods, directed by Frank Tashlin.

This is the first short in which animator Norman McCabe received screen credit.

Before the start of our feature presentation, the staff of The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour wants to watch with you, another clip episode fromQI, a very fun (at least to us,) quiz show on the BBC, featuring Stephen Fry and Sandi Toksvig.

Remember, don't let the dog watch this or they'll be yawning all day.

We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is the 1975 masterpiece Nashville, directed by Robert Altman, and starring a plethora of stars, includingBarbara Baxley, Ned Beatty, Karen Black, Ronee Blakley, Keith Carradine, Geraldine Chaplin, Shelley Duvall, Allen Garfield, Henry Gibson, Scott Glenn, Jeff Goldblum, Barbara Harris, Michael Murphy, Lily Tomlin, and Keenan Wynn.. Nashville opened to critical acclaim and is considered on of Altman's greatest film. The film was one of the highest grossing films of that year. Even though the film was a huge success, many in the mainstream country-music community at the time believed Nashville ridiculed their talent and sincerity. So just push away from the table, and join us in watching this truly great movie Nashville .

The film was very much improvised by the actors and actresses, who used the screenplay only as a guide. They spent a great amount of their time in character, and the movie was shot almost entirely in sequence. All songs were recorded live rather than being prerecorded in a studio.

ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (436)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Porky Pig Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1936 The Village Smithy, directed by Tex Avery.

The camel from Little Beau Porky briefly appears in place of a horse, only to be dragged away when the narrator says that it is supposed to be "the legion cartoon".

Before the start of our feature presentation, the staff of The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour wants to watch with you, another episode of Letters Live: this time with Cate Blanchett

Cate almost made me want to get a crazy letter like that

We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is the 1975 drama Manila in the Claws of Light (AKA Maynila, sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag), directed by Lino Brocka, and starring and Rafael Roco, Jr.. Manila in the Claws of Light was released during the repressive Marcos regime, and amazingly, the film was about to gain international critical recognition. It is widely considered the greatest Philippine film of all time. The film was restored in 4K resolution in 2013. The restoration was performed by World Cinema Foundation and other groups. So just push away from the table, get ready to enjoy this feast for the eyes and join us in watching Manila in the Claws of Light .

Contrary to what was being depicted, the famous establishing shot of Julio forlornly waiting by the signage of Misericordia Street was *not* actually shot there. Bembol Roco was in fact on nearby Tambacan Street with a prop signage superimposed over it; a camera placed on the second level of an adjacent Chinese temple to achieve that gradual zoom-in. The real Misericordia intersection was crowded and did not provide the satisfactory angles necessary for the narrative. (Misericordia was known as a "red light district" back in the 1970s.)

ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (435)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Porky Pig Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1936 Little Beau Porky, directed by Frank Tashlin.

Most of the elements within this short is reused in Bob Clampett's 1940 short Ali-Baba Bound. Both shorts feature Porky as a member of the French Foreign Legion, accompanied by a camel, and must fend off against Ali Baba (referred to as Ali Mode in this short) and his army of men from a desert fortress.

We've selected another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is the 1975 historical drama Barry Lyndon, directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Ryan O'Neal, Marisa Berenson, Patrick Magee, Leonard Rossiter, and Hardy Krüger. Based on the 1844 novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon by William Makepeace Thackeray, the film tells the story of an Irish rogue who uses his cunning and wit to climb the social ladder of 18th-century England, transforming from the humble Redmond Barry into the noble Barry Lyndon. When Barry Lyndon first premiered, many critics were put off by its slow pace and restrained emotional tone. However, as with much of Kubrick's work, the film's reputation has grown over time and it is now considered a masterpiece. So, push away from the table, prepare to feast your eyes, and join us in watching Barry Lyndon.

Contrary to legend, this movie did use artificial lighting in some scenes (for example, when Bryan (David Morley) learns he's getting a horse). However, it is true that no electronic lighting was used for the candle-lit scenes. A lens built by the Carl Zeiss Company for N.A.S.A., a 50mm Zeiss lens modified with the Kollmorgen adaptor used in still cameras, was used to shoot scenes lit only by candle. This lens had the largest aperture of any ever built for movie use (f/0.7). In order to provide as much light as possible in the candle-lit scenes, Stanley Kubrick used custom-made candles. Each candle had three wicks instead of one, and used a highly volatile wax. This resulted in the candles burning down very quickly, which is why many of the candles seen are so short.

ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (434)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Porky Pig Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1936 Milk and Money, directed by Tex Avery.

At the door of MR. & MRS. D. ONNE AND FAMILY, Porky leaves three bottles of milk, saying "Mister, Missus, and family" as he sets them down, the last one having a quintuple baby nipple on it. This is a joke on the quintuplets born to a Canadian couple named Dionne who were in the news continually for years.

Before the start of our feature presentation, the staff of The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour wants to watch with you, a fun clip with John Mulaney

Hey, everybody finds John funny

We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is the 1975 musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show), directed by Jim Sharman, and starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Patricia Quinn, Richard O'Brien, Little Nell. and Meat Loaf. At this point, most of you bunkies know The Rocky Horror Picture Show so just push away from the table, get ready to dance around and join us in watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

When this movie first opened, it had a traditional release, with afternoon and early evening screenings. It bombed. Meat Loaf said he attended an opening week performance with writer and director Jim Sharman in the Midwest, and the theater was empty except for them. Midnight screenings became popular in the mid-1970s, and word of mouth began to spread that the midnight audience might enjoy this movie. It began showing at midnight in a few cities, and became so popular that it has been shown continuously in movie theaters since 1975, making it the longest theatrical run in history. The Museum Lichtspiele cinema in Munich, Germany has screened the movie every week since June 24, 1977, offering special "RHPS-Kits" to enable celebrations during the show. The kits contain a biscuit (for the toast), rice, a whistle, a candle (for There's a Light), and a sheet of paper with instructions for the Time Warp.
