ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour Today (312)

ACME would like to wishes all of their friends and family a happy and healthy New Year!

Before our feature presentation,

ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1946 Book Revue, directed by Bob Clampett. (Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, and Porky Pig make a cameo on the cover of a comic book.)

The short is very similar to an earlier short, Have You Got Any Castles?, which also depicts books coming to life with celebrity caricatures in place of the characters.

Once again, we here at The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like to watch with you Apple's annual Lunar New Year film, shot entirely on an an Apple iPhone (a 14 Pro) and directed by Venice Film Festival award-winning director Peng Fei:

The film celebrates the power of overcoming hardships and celebrates the strength of resilience and determination.

We are in the middle of the Lunar New Year celebrations and we're sure you need a break from your family. Here at ACME, we can think of no better way to relax than watching a forgotten 1946 film noir, based on a script, written by John Huston. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching Jean Negulesco's film, Three Strangers (which actually premiered on this date in 1946.) Once again, if you can't watch this today, please put it on a list of films you much watch (you'll understand why we choose it to watch during the Lunar New Year.) So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.

At one point this film was intended to be a sequel to The Maltese Falcon. Following the success of that film, Warner Bros. wanted to make a sequel. Falcon write/director John Huston said he'd previously written an un-filmed script for Warner Bros. that would be appropriate and would only require the character names to be changed to the Humphrey Bogart, Sydney Greenstreet and Mary Astor characters. However, Warner Bros. discovered they did not own the rights to the characters except for their appearance in The Maltese Falcon.

ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour Today (311)

ACME would like to wishes all of their friends and family a happy and healthy New Year!

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Merrie Melodies cartoon, the 1945 Nasty Quacks, directed by Frank Tashlin.

Daffy packs up his things and announces that he's leaving, then comes back and tells his master that "...the government doesn't want us to do any non-essential traveling," a reference to how travel had to be reserved for WWII soldiers fighting overseas, but by the time the cartoon was released in theaters, World War II had ended.

In celebration of the Lunar New Year, today's episode of The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour is sponsored by Watsons (think CVS, only bigger):

Hopefully a giant music playing rabbit comes to your home and makes everyone have a Happy Beautiful New Year, (and not murder you all in some weird Donnie Darko-esque way.)

Tonight is the Lunar New Year Eve and you may already need a break from your family. Here at ACME, we can think of no better way to relax than watching a classic comedy. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching Stephen Chow and Lee Lik-chi's 1996 comic take on the TV series Iron Chef, God of Cookery, starring Stephen Chow, Karen Mok, Vincent Kok and Richard Ng. (This is also a parody o fthe film The Chinese Feast directed by Tsui Hark,) So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.

Like another of Chow's films, Shoalin Soccer, where super powered monks used their mystical Shaolin abilities to literally play soccer, The God of Cookery uses a similar style to juxtapose something very real, like cooking, with something very fantastical, like gravity and physics defying martial arts. Only here, that juxtaposition is even more heightened, because this movie is technically set in the real world, with no magic or mysticism on offer.

ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour Today (310)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1945 Ain't That Ducky, directed by Friz Freleng.

Victor Moore did the voice of the hunter in this cartoon for free. When approached by Friz Freleng, he was shown a caricature of him as the hunter. Moore replied, "I love it, if you'd just put more hair on my head."

Before the start of our feature presentation, join the staff while they sit back, turn off all the lights and watch this amazing set of videos before they are taken down -

A group of artists worked together virtually to create a colorfully psychedelic AI-generated music video for the iconic 1973 Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon.

We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is a quiet 1962 drama, An Autumn Afternoon (Sanma no Aji), directed by the Japanese master Yasujirô Ozu, and starring Shima Iwashita, Chishû Ryû, Keiji Sada, and Mariko Okada. The film was Ozu's last film; he died the following year on the day he turned 60. It was considered a masterpiece when released. In some ways, the film is considered a remake of his film Late Spring. In both films, the director's favorite actor, Chishû Ryû, plays a widower trying to persuade his adult daughter to get married. As in many of the director's works, there is a formal stillness to the film; There is not a single camera movement in the entire film. The film is frequently listed on many 'greatest film' lists. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching An Autumn Afternoon. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.

The placement of the alcoholic drinks may be taken as an early example of product placement. Every bottle has at least half of its label facing the camera, making it possible recognize the brands e.g the star on the beer bottle labels, the Johnny Walker bottle, the bottles on the shelves in the bar. There are also two large Suntory signs on the bar wall. The name of the bar - Tory's Bar - could be a reference to Tory's Whisky, released after the Second World War. However, the different drinks are made/ imported by two rival companies - Suntory (e.g. whisky) and Sapporo (e.g. the beer). The placement is unlikely to be due to any commercial sponsorship and is more likely to be an indication of Ozu's vision of the characters and their drinking habits.

ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour Today (309)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1945 Draftee Dafty, directed by Bob Clampett. This was the last cartoon that was released during Bob Clampett's time at the Warner Bros. cartoon studio before he left four months later.

Daffy had already been depicted as serving in the armed forces in two earlier cartoons, Daffy - The Commando and Plane Daffy.

Before the start of our feature presentation, let's take one last look back at 2022 with Mental Floss -

I'm sure 2023 will be just as interesting

We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is a unique 1961 western, One-Eyed Jacks, the only film directed by Marlon Brando, and starring Brando, Karl Malden, Pina Pellicer, Katy Jurado, Ben Johnson, and Slim Pickens. The film was plagued with highly publicized production problems and opened to mixed reviews. Stanley Kubrick was originally signed on to direct the film but left the production and was replaced by Marlon Brando shortly after shooting began. Brando turned in a cut of the film that ran more than five hours before walking away from the production, and Paramount executives eventually shortened the film down to 141 minutes. The film ultimately has become a cult classic. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching One-Eyed Jacks. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.

With a budget of $6 million, the film did not do well at the box office. To help offset the costs, Marlon Brando persuaded Universal to pick up the tab. In return, he agreed to make five films for the studio: The Ugly American, Bedtime Story, The Appaloosa, A Countess from Hong Kong, and The Night of the Following Day, none of which performed well at the box office.
