It's the 300 episode of ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour Today
Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with 1964 Halloween episode of Bewitched - The Witches Are Out.
This is the first appearance of Marion Lorne as Aunt Clara. Clara's #1 hobby is collecting doorknobs. After helping Samantha in reforming a mortal over-stereotypical views of witches, she decides to add every doorknob in his house to her collection, leaving him unable to open or leave his own home; the police think he's crazy when he tells them all his doorknobs are missing. In real life, Marion Lorne was actually an avid doorknob collector.
ACME would like to wish everyone a very Spooky Halloween season with a special Drive-In double-feature tonight. The programming department has put together a double feature revolving around Professor Bernard Quatermass, British TV's first space hero. Tonight we have the 1955 film The Quatermass Xperiment (a.k.a. The Creeping Unknown in the US) directed by one of the Hammer films stable of directors, Val Guest and the 1957 sequel film, Quatermass 2 (a.k.a. The Enemy from Space in the US) also directed by Val Guest. So we would like you to relax (quick, find the most comfortable seat on the sofa,) get a snack (perhaps, some popcorn,) and a beverage and join The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour in watching the first film in today's double feature, The Quatermass Xperiment.
Nigel Kneale had several reservations about this adaptation of his tale, conceding it was well-directed and pared down with pace from his original story line. He deplored the use of US actors Brian Donlevy (finding him far too unsympathetic and implausible as the lead role) and Margia Dean. Les Bowie's tripe-based realisation of the creature, also vexed the writer. Kneale was further infuriated by the BBC, who refused him any involvement or remuneration for this commercial use of his work, since as a contracted staff member all rights remained with the Corporation and not the individual.
I'm guess we could all use a break, right about now. As you run into the kitchen and get a beverage refill or run into the bathroom and replenish the eco-system, we here at The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour want to watch the 1931 Betty Boop cartoon, Bimbo’s Initiation 1931 from the Fleischer Studios Talkartoon, directed by Betty's co-creator, Grim Natwick.
There is a possible Mickey Mouse cameo in the short. At the beginning of the short, after Bimbo falls through the sewer, a cartoon mouse (most likely a member of the cult Bimbo is persuaded to join throughout the short) locks the sewer lid, hiding the way out. The cartoon mouse who locks the way out resembles Mickey Mouse.
Our second feature tonight is the 1957 film, Quatermass 2 (a.k.a. The Enemy from Space in the US), again directed by Val Guest. Brian Donlevy reprises his role as Professor Bernard Quatermass, making him the only actor to play the character on screen twice. In spite of this, he was reportedly Quatermass creator Nigel Kneale's least favorite actor in the role. This is one of the first films to use 2/ II referring to it being the sequel of the original film. So please join us here at The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour and sit back, get comfortable and enjoy watching our second feature this evening, Quatermass 2.
In between takes Brian Donlevy's toupée was accidentally blown off by the airplane engine wind machines used during the film's climax.

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (299)
Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1944 Tick Tock Tuckered , (co-starring, of course, Porky Pig,) directed by Bob Clampett.
This short is a color remake of Porky's Badtime Story. In this short, Daffy Duck replaces Gabby Goat as Porky Pig's roommate.
We're still doing some research on supercut mashup videos for a future special feature and came across this video, so before the start of our feature presentation, ACME would like you to watch with us, Mel Blanc screaming his head off.
Blanc is considered one of the greatest voice character actors and this is merely a small taste of his talents.
(Before we start with our feature presentation, I need to apology for mis-posting the wrong film last week. I meant to post Luis Buñuel's The Young One (La Joven) and reposted Michael Powell's Peeping Tom - sorry about that. I've corrected the problem.)
We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is another one of Luis Buñuel's films - the 1961 scandalous classic, Viridiana , starring starring Silvia Pinal, and Fernando Rey. This is the film that Buñuel made upon his return to his native Spain, right after the controversy of The Young One had in America. Viridiana was both banned in Spain from playing in the country until 1977, after Franco’s death and denounced by the Vatican. And yet, the film is considered a masterpiece. In order to protect themselves from embarrassment, or merely because they wanted it censored entirely, Viridiana was erased from existence. All documentation pertaining to the film was destroyed; it's like it had never been made. In another ironic twist, because the film was officially buried, it means that it had never been made, and if it had never been made, Buñuel and the film's producers escaped any kind of censureIf you haven't seen the film, to say anything more would rob the film of the power to still shock. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching this brilliant work, Viridiana. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.
After years of living in Mexico, Luis Buñuel was persuaded to make his first film in his native Spain, since 1936 by the vanguard of contemporary young Spanish film-makers who admired his work. The script was initially approved by the Spanish authorities with a few minor changes. They had no opportunity to view the finished film until it played at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the Palme d'Or. Nevertheless, they were horrified enough by what they saw to ban the film and fire José Muñoz Fontán, Spain's governmental Director of Film for allowing the film be shown at Cannes.

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (298)
Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1944 Tom Turk and Daffy , (co-starring, of course, Porky Pig,) directed by Chuck Jones.
This is one of the earliest Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts to be written by two storymen instead of just one; in this case both Michael Maltese and Tedd Pierce wrote this cartoon. Neither are credited by their actual names; instead, they are credited as "The Staff".
Before the start of today's feature, the ACME staff would like to share with you a special Word of the Day - PANDICULATION:
It's the act of stretching oneself (often accompanied by yawning), not that we think that about today's feature.
(I'm so sorry I posted the wrong film last week)
We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is the 1960 drama The Young One (La joven) directed by Luis Buñuel, starring starring Zachary Scott, Bernie Hamilton, Key Meersman, Crahan Denton, and Claudio Brook. This was Buñuel's second (and last) film in English; the first being the 1954 version of Robinson Crusoe. Although the film was critically acclaimed at the time, receiving a special notation at Cannes, the film, dealing with issues of racism and rape (handled quite sensitively), is largely forgotten today. The Young One takes an amoral stance on race and sex (which seem to be closely related) and leaves us with a much more troubling puzzle. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching this forgotten work, The Young One. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.
The Young One did not find a large audience when it opened in the U.S. Some have pinned it directly on The New York Times review, written by the influential Bosley Crowther, which more or less killed its chances in theatres at the time.

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (297)
Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Looney Tunes classic cartoon, the 1943 Daffy - The Commando, directed by Friz Freleng.
Because of pervasive references to Nazis, Adolf Hitler, and World War II, this short has never aired on American television. Despite this, it is a staple in public domain videos.
Our crack staff was doing some research on supercut mashup videos for a future special feature when they rediscovered this award winning video, so before the start of our feature presentation, ACME would like you to watch with us, Chuck Workman's amazing Precious Images -
Incredibly, the short features approximately 470 clips of movie images depicting the history of American film.
As we mentioned last week, we've picked a very specific entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is the unintentional companion film to Psycho, the 1960 psychological horror film Peeping Tom directed by Michael Powell, starring starring Carl Boehm, Anna Massey, Pamela Green, and Moira Shearer. Though it was banned for many years, filmmakers that saw it when it opened cite it as being similarly influential as the film Psycho, maybe more so. Although the set pieces are more artfully constructed in Psycho, the killer in Peeping Tom is much more tragic and sympathetic, a major innovation for film at the time. Just as Psycho is now considered one of Hitchcock's best and most famous film, Peeping Tom nearly destroyed Michael Powell's career. The film content was considered so lurid, that at the time, critics went out of their way to heap derision on both the film and the director personally, likening him to the Marquis de Sade. The film was championed by many, including Martin Scorsese, and now the film is considered a classic.
The film was heavily cut by the British Board of Film Classification before release and consequently many scenes still have a ragged feel to them. The murders of Vivian and Dora were toned down, shots of nudity were deleted (including photos of nude girls in the album), the suicide of the killer was shortened, and scenes featuring the spike were also edited. Some dialogue was also cut (which explains the abrupt ending to the conversation between the policemen in the car). Although some cuts were restored in later video and DVD releases much of the edited footage is now considered lost forever. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching this disturbing work, Peeping Tom. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.
Pamela Green said her makeup man was applying pancake makeup to her naked body for an upcoming nude scene when the third director assistant burst into the dressing room saying the director wanted them to hurry up so they can start filming. He suddenly looked awkward when he spotted the totally nude Green. The makeup man tossed a sponge at him, told him to shut up and cover her back. The two men started massaging her entire body with makeup trying not to miss any spots. At one point the makeup man even said, "Bend over Pam, I want to do your bum." She almost started laughing because the situation was was so absurd.

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (296)
Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1943 Scrap Happy Daffy , (the final black and white cartoon featuring Daffy,) directed by Frank Tashlin.
The purpose of this cartoon was to encourage people at that time to donate any scrap material to help the U.S. military make more weapons and vehicles to fight in the war.
Before the start of our feature presentation, ACME would watch with you everyone's favorite grumpy Uncle Lou have to put up with a bunch of hack comedians:
I can't believe how patience he is with all of them. Lou was not known for dealing with fools gladly.
We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is the seismic 1960 horror film, Psycho, directed by Alfred Hitchcock ,written by Joseph Stefano, and starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles, John Gavin, and Martin Balsam. At the time of its release in 1960, Psycho received mixed reviews and caused a great deal of controversy. The film is now considered on of Hitchcock's best and most famous film - as opposed to Peeping Tom, which came out in the same year. The film dealt with similar thematic issues is now also considered a masterpiece, but nearly ruined Michael Powell's career. (We will screen the film next week.) Hitchcock financed much of the film himself in return for a large percentage of the profits, which earned him millions. There is much to talk about in this film but the murder in the shower is one of the most famous scenes in cinematic history, a textbook example of brilliant film editing. The scene is also probably best remembered for Bernard Herrmann’s masterful score The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching the suspenseful Psycho. So push away from the table, get comfortable (you may want to leave the lights on,) and enjoy the film.
Hitchcock paid the title sequence designer Saul Bass (also credited as "Pictorial Consultant") $2,000 to render storyboards for the scene where Arbogast is killed at the stairs. Bass was excited about the movie and asked Hitch for the opportunity. Hitchcock discarded his work because the shots showed Arbogast's feet slowly going up the stairs and this prepared the audience for a shock. Hitch wanted it to be a surprise and that's why he filmed Arbogast in a completely natural way.
