The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (242)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Merrie Melodies Bugs Bunny cartoon, the 1959 Apes of Wrath (with a cameo from Daffy Duck), directed by Friz Freleng.

This cartoon recycles the plot from the short Gorilla My Dreams, also incorporating plot elements from the short A Mouse Divided.

Before the start of our feature presentation, ACME Eagle Hand Soap who like to share with you this important PSA: How to pass a body cavity search -

Remember, You have one job to do, DON'T BLOW IT!

We've picked another interesing entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's choice is one of the only animated features on the list - the 1954 adaption of the George Orwell classic story, Animal Farm by the creative team, John Halas and Joy Batchelor. When first released in 1954, the British Film Board felt the film was not appropriate for children and gave it a rating certificate of "X", prohibiting anyone younger than 18 from seeing the film. This hurt the film's box office receipts and it took 15 years to recover its budget. While Halas and Batchelor’s film was generally faithful to the plot of the book, there were some substantial alterations. Some of the book’s characters were removed from the film version, including the mares Molly and Clover. However, the most significant change was its ending. Orwell’s novel ends pessimistically by describing the pigs as indistinguishable from their human masters. In contrast, the film presents a more uplifting ending in which the animals obtain outside help from other farms to successfully overthrow Napoleon. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching this film, Animal Farm. So push away from the table (if you ate meat before the film - that is between you and your maker), get comfortable and enjoy the film.

Your tax dollars at work - The CIA obtained the film rights to Animal Farm from Orwell's widow, Sonia, after his death and covertly funded the production as anti-Communist propaganda. Some sources assert that the ending of the story was altered by the CIA (in the book, the pigs and humans join forces) to press home their message, but it is equally possible that the more upbeat ending of the movie was an artistic decision, to give the film more audience appeal.

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (241)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Merrie Melodies Bugs Bunny cartoon, the 1959 Hare-Abian Nights (featuring Yosemite Sam), directed by Ken Harris.

This is the only Yosemite Sam cartoon from the classic era which had no involvement at all from the Friz Freleng unit, and the only Yosemite Sam cartoon from the classic era which the Chuck Jones team worked on, even though Chuck Jones himself never directed any Yosemite Sam cartoons until From Hare to Eternity, which was ironically the final cartoon he ever directed during his lifetime, done as a dedication to Friz Freleng who died in 1995, a year before that cartoon's release.

Before the start of our feature presentation, ACME Eagle Hand Soap would like you to join us in watching a middle-aged man accidentally feel a real emotion while doing a comedy bit on a television show -

Stephen Colbert keeping it real, if only in an accidental way.

We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's choice is Herbert Biberman's largely forgotten 1954 film, Salt of the Earth, written by Michael Wilson (both blacklisted during the McCarthy era,) and starring Rosaura Revueltas, Will Geer, and David Wolfe. This film is based on the 1951 strike against the Empire Zinc Company in Grant County, New Mexico. The film was panned by most critics when it came out and was banned from playing in most US theatres. Salt of the Earth was received favorably overseas and won the grand prize at the Prague Film Festival. Revueltas also won an award for her portrayal of Esperanza. She was blacklisted by the Mexican film industry after her work in the picture, modern sources note, but continued to act in the theater in East Berlin and Havana. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching this interesting, if unfamiliar film, Salt of the Earth. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.

Members of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, Local 890, who were part of the original strike upon which this story is based, appear in this film as either extras or supporting cast. Juan Chacón, who played Ramon Quintero, was the Union Local president.

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (240)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Looney Tunes Bugs Bunny cartoon, the 1959 Baton Bunny, directed by Chuck Jones and Abe Levitow.

This cartoon features a special opening credit: "The Warner Bros. Symphony Orchestra playing 'Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna' by Franz von Suppé". In 1959, Warner Bros. disbanded its longtime 70-piece studio orchestra, famed for its distinctive brass-heavy sound. Director and classical music-lover Chuck Jones made this short in part as a final showcase for the ensemble that had served him so well throughout his career at the studio.

Before the start of our feature presentation, ACME Eagle Hand Soap would like you to join us in watching two men awkwardly express real emotions and love for each other on television-

God bless John Mulaney on his journey and God bless Anna Marie Tendler on moving past this.

The staff has the day off to be with their family on this day. Before they raced out the door, someone remembered that we haven't shown a concert in a year. Given that this is the anniversary week of his passing in 2003, we (I) thought we should watch a concert of his. There is a 1982 concert from October 1, of that year, at the New Jersay Capital Theatre that seems perfect to take our minds off this day. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching Warren Zevon this evening. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the show.

Warren Zevon's work has often been praised by well-known musicians, including Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young. His best-known compositions include Werewolves of London, Lawyers, Guns and Money, Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner and Mohammed's Radio. Other well-known songs written by Zevon have been recorded by other artists, including Poor Poor Pitiful Me (a top 40 hit by Linda Ronstadt), Accidentally Like a Martyr, Carmelita, and Hasten Down the Wind.

(Warren belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but I'm not going to get into that this evening.)

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (239)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Looney Tunes Bugs Bunny cartoon, the 1958 Pre-Hysterical Hare (featuring Elmer Fudd), directed by Robert McKimson.

Arthur Q. Bryan, who ordinarily provided the voice of Elmer Fudd, was ill during production of this cartoon, Dave Barry provided the character voice.

We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's choice -  Nicholas Ray's 1954 (no other way to describe it but) bizarre cult western, Johnny Guitar, starring Joan Crawford, Sterling Hayden, Mercedes McCambridge, Ernest Borgnine and Scott Brady. Nicholas Ray once again subverts the genre, this time the very conservative form - the Western, into a study in mob hysteria, condemning the Communist witch-hunt then tearing Hollywood apart. All that, and to see Joan Crawford in a white gown in a saloon. When to film premiered, American critics found the film almost laughably campy but European critics almost immediately saw the film as a brilliant subversive feminist fever dream. Filmmakers ranging from Jean-Luc Godard to Jim Jarmusch and Martin Scorsese are it's biggest fans. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching Johnny Guitar. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.

Actresses Joan Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge fought both on and off camera. Nicholas Ray used the women's mutual antagonism to spark their performances. One night, in a druken rage, Crawford scattered the costumes worn by McCambridge along an Arizona highway. Cast and crew had to collect the outfits.
