May 2018 be a year without regrets

My only regret is that I have not drunk more champagne in my life. - John Maynard Keynes

Three be the things I shall never attain: Envy, content, and sufficient champagne. - Dorothy Parker

This has been a tough year for most of us - hopefully the upcoming one will be a better one for us all.

The Death Of The Old Year - Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Full knee-deep lies the winter snow,
And the winter winds are wearily sighing:
Toll ye the church bell sad and slow,
And tread softly and speak low,
For the old year lies a-dying.
Old year you must not die;
You came to us so readily,
You lived with us so steadily,
Old year you shall not die.

He lieth still: he doth not move:
He will not see the dawn of day.
He hath no other life above.
He gave me a friend and a true truelove
And the New-year will take 'em away.
Old year you must not go;
So long you have been with us,
Such joy as you have seen with us,
Old year, you shall not go.

He froth'd his bumpers to the brim;
A jollier year we shall not see.
But tho' his eyes are waxing dim,
And tho' his foes speak ill of him,
He was a friend to me.
Old year, you shall not die;
We did so laugh and cry with you,
I've half a mind to die with you,
Old year, if you must die.

He was full of joke and jest,
But all his merry quips are o'er.
To see him die across the waste
His son and heir doth ride post-haste,
But he'll be dead before.
Every one for his own.
The night is starry and cold, my friend,
And the New-year blithe and bold, my friend,
Comes up to take his own.

How hard he breathes! over the snow
I heard just now the crowing cock.
The shadows flicker to and fro:
The cricket chirps: the light burns low:
'Tis nearly twelve o'clock.
Shake hands, before you die.
Old year, we'll dearly rue for you:
What is it we can do for you?
Speak out before you die.

His face is growing sharp and thin.
Alack! our friend is gone,
Close up his eyes: tie up his chin:
Step from the corpse, and let him in
That standeth there alone,
And waiteth at the door.
There's a new foot on the floor, my friend,
And a new face at the door, my friend,
A new face at the door.

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (48)

Another page from the ACME Catalog -

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Tweety and Sylvester (featuring Granny,) Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1956 Friz Freleng directed, Tugboat Granny:

Some of the scenes would later be recycled in one Pink Panther cartoon, due to the fact that some of the Warner Bros. animators would establish DePatie-Freleng Enterprises as well as being hired by United Artists to create Pink Panther and other cartoons eight years later.

Another Year has come and gone and we here at The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like to remember some of the music legends we lost in 2017. Acme is remembering some of the music giants (in no particular order) today

Sleep In Heavenly Peas

For some of you - This is a subliminal commercial for Le Sueur® Brand Peas

If not, then it's just another holiday song.

And that was for those of you not in a particularly holiday mood at all.

I couldn't wait until next year - here is a brief Puddles Christmas Concert -

As today is the first night of Christmas, here are some more unusual gifts to consider giving -

You might have to find an old copy of the Savoy Cocktail Book, copyright 1930 (of which I have a copy,) in order to figure out what some of these drinks are.

Also, did you buy anyone a gift as inappropriate as a weasel in a bikini this holiday season?

If you run out of topics around the table this evening, feel free to choose any one of the 500 random facts from the folks at Mental Floss -

Once again, we here at ACME once again want to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday by sharing this Christmas poem:

Keeping Christmas by Henry Van Dyke

There is a better thing than the observance of Christmas day, and that is, keeping Christmas.

Are you willing… to forget what you have done for other people, and to remember what other people have done for you;

to ignore what the world owes you, and to think what you owe the world;

to put your rights in the background, and your duties in the middle distance, and your chances to do a little more than your duty in the foreground;

to see that men and women are just as real as you are, and try to look behind their faces to their hearts, hungry for joy;

to own up to the fact that probably the only good reason for your existence is not what you are going to get out of life, but what you are going to give to life;

to close your book of complaints against the management of the universe, and look around you for a place where you can sow a few seeds of happiness -

Are you willing to do these things even for a day? Then you can keep Christmas.

Are you willing to stoop down and consider the needs and desires of little children;

to remember the weakness and loneliness of people growing old;

to stop asking how much your friends love you, and ask yourself whether you love them enough;

to bear in mind the things that other people have to bear in their hearts;

to try to understand what those who live in the same home with you really want, without waiting for them to tell you;

to make a grave for your ugly thoughts, and a garden for your kindly feelings with the gate open -

Are you willing to do these things, even for a day? Then you can keep Christmas.

Are you willing to believe that love is the strongest thing in the world - stronger than hate, stronger than evil, stronger than death - and that the blessed life which began in Bethlehem nineteen hundred years ago is the image and brightness of the Eternal Love?

Then you can keep Christmas.

BEWARE THE FATE OF JABEZ DAWES

We're all having our Christmas Eve dinner of the seven fishes, we keep losing track of how many fishes we've consumed, (it might have something to do with the number of bottles of white wine that we've consumed.)

Here's some fun facts about Christmas while we try to sort this all out.

Well, maybe you knew some of these facts (especially if you've been playing the home version.)

Why not watch these cartoons for your family while we try to sober up -

Happy Holiday from Prisoner 1073015

Through the mid-'60s, Phil Spector was focused on singles, with his definition of an album being "two hits and ten pieces of junk." He took a different approach, however, when he put together a Christmas album in 1963, where he put a great deal of effort into every track. So please join us at ACME while we listen to The Phil Spector Christmas Album.

The only original song on the album was Darlene Love's Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), which he wrote with Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. Spector issued the song as a single when the album came out, but unfortunately this was the same day US president John F. Kennedy was shot and killed. This seriously dampened the holiday mood and the single, as well as the album, were withdrawn.

I know it's not Christmas in our home unless we hear Darlene Love sing, so please enjoy Darlene Love's very first Christmas appearance on the David Letterman Show

And here's her 2014 (and final) appearance on the David Letterman Show:

But fear not -

Merry Christmas, you wonderful old Building and Loan!

December 20, 1946 -
The Frank Capra film It's A Wonderful Life had a preview showing for charity at New York City's Globe Theatre, (a day before its official premiere) on this date.

The film is regarded as a classic and is a staple of Christmas television around the world, although, due to its high production costs and stiff competition at the box office, financially, it was considered a flop.

There have been countless parody of this classic film -

(Another, more adult alternate ending of the film) -

This is truly a strange little film.

The eight crazy nights has come to an end.

It's the Eighth night of Hanukkah.

You've probably run out of gifts at this point, wrap your family's fresh laundry as the gift that shows you've done the laundry. At this point, look up a local oil recycler - it will do better for everyone as a biofuel.

Up On The House Top -

The first Christmas song to mention Santa Claus was Benjamin Hanby's Up On The Housetop. Written in 1864, Hanby was inspired Clement Moore's 1823 poem A Visit from Saint Nicholas.

Someday At Christmas -

This was written by Motown songwriters Ron Miller and Bryan Wells, the team that also wrote Stevie Wonder's songs A Place in the Sun and Yester-me, Yester-you, Yesterday.

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus -

Boston church leaders tried to have the song I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus banned in the 1950s because they thought it “promoted physical intimacy.” Singer Jimmy Boyd had to fly to Boston and explain to them why it wasn’t obscene.

Santa Claus Is Coming to Town -

Santa Claus Is Coming to Town actually has a truly depressing back-story: songwriter James "Haven" Gillespie was broke, jobless, and his brother had just died when he was asked to write a Christmas song. He was originally too overcome with grief, but eventually found inspiration in his brother’s death and the Christmas memories they had together.

Little Christmas Tree -

We here at ACME are wishing you time to enjoy the simple pleasures of this holiday season.

Just a couple more day to go

It's the Sixth Day of Hanukkah

Swingin' Dreidel  Kenny Ellis -

A Hanukkah Mitzvah CBS Cares   Mayim Bialik -

Remember, so far there has been no barking dog version of I had a Little Dreidel. You might begin thinking about where you are going to store your Hanukkah decorations? (I don't mean to insinuate that you aren't normally observant. Perhaps you proudly display your heirloom menorah in your living room. I can't be everywhere.)

There are literally dozens of adaptations of A Christmas Carol. Let's take a look at a few of them:

Marley's Ghost (1901) -

Scrooge (1935) -

Scrooge (1951) -

(It isn't really Christmas in our home unless we are watching this at about 2 am Christmas morning 'assisting Santa' with the gifts.)

A Christmas Carol (1954) -

(This was actually the first adaptation to be shot in color, but only the black-and-white kinoscope survived.)

This could be the greatest mash-up ever, or at least the most labor intensive. Heath Waterman has spent 18 months putting together this labor of love, retelling the story of Ebenezer Scrooge in his video Twelve Hundred Ghosts - A Christmas Carol in Supercut.

Mr. Waterman uses clips from over over 400 versions of the holiday classic.

Blackadders Christmas Carol -

And there is no better way to get into the holiday spirit than drinking spirits -

Eggnog is usually thought of as a Christmas beverage and to tell the truth I am not a huge fan of Eggnog. So I find it amusing that the recipe that I'm posting is for Eggnog (Above is a copy of my family recipe - my father sent it to his sister in 1962.)

Coquito, a Puerto Rican twist on the classic, is a family favorite and I thought I’d share it with you and perhaps you can try it out on your family.

Please note: these drinks go down quite smoothly and are very potent – they could be administered as a calmative for frayed nerves during the holiday season.

Ingredients:

* 4 large egg yolks
* 1/4 cup of sugar
* 1/2 can of (14-ounces) condensed milk
* 1 14-ounce cans evaporated milk
* 1 1/2 cans of 15-ounce cans cream of coconut
* 1/2 of a Fifth of white rum (or more)
* 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
* 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
* 1 teaspoon coconut (or vanilla) extract

Tools:

* Drink Blender
* Can opener
* Glass

Directions:

Add the egg yolks, sugar, spices and vanilla into the blender. Mix until well blended.

Add the evaporated & condensed milk to the blender and briefly mix. (Condensed milk is very thick - you may want to open the can up all the way and scrap out all of the milk with a spatula.)

Vigorously shack the can of cream of coconut (it tends to separate.) Pour the cream of coconut into the blender and mix well. Scrap out any remaining coconut stuff from the can.

Add the rum and mix. Taste. If you think you need more rum, add it.

Refrigerate for at least an hour before serving. Serve cold.

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (46)

Another page from the ACME Catalog -

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Sylvester The Cat and Hippety Hopper Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1954 Robert McKimson directed, Bell Hoppy:

This cartoon's plot is essentially a role-reversal version of the age-old "belling the cat" fable.

It's the Fifth Night of Hanukkah and ACME wants you to join them in celebrating the holidays with your friends at The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour - the official soap of our nation's bald eagles. Remember if your bald eagle's talons are filthy, do we have a soap for you!

Duly noted.

Rock and Roll Santa  Jan Terri -

I was going to post Excuse My Christmas but then I found many versions of this song. I am even more confused this year - this is an amazingly bad performance. But Ms. Terri is very well known as an 'Outsider Rock and Roll' performer and there are people posting on the web that this is one of their favorite holiday songs. It is not one of mine.

I'll Be Home For Christmas   Jillian Hall -

I get the point that WWD star Jillian Hall is supposed to be singing badly but she is not a good enough singer to put it off - it's just bad without being funny.

Christmas Tree Lyrics  Lady GaGa -

I actually like many of Lady GaGa's songs, but this just makes me feel dirty (and not in a good way.)

Although this song is associated with Christmas, there is no mention of the holiday in the lyrics. This was written by the lyricist Sammy Cahn and the Broadway songwriter Jule Styne in 1945.

Originally recorded by Western actor Doye O'Dell in 1948, the song found popularity two years later with a cover by Ernest Tubb. Elvis Presley recorded it in 1957 for his Elvis' Christmas Album.

I'll Be Home for Christmas -

This was originally recorded by Bing Crosby in 1943, and it quickly became one of America's most popular holiday songs along with White Christmas, which Bing had put onto disc the previous year.

Jingle Bells -

This was the first song played in space. On December 16, 1965, astronauts Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford were aboard Gemini 6 when they played this on a harmonica and bells to Mission Control. Both instruments are displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

Santa Claus is Comin' to Town -

This was written in 1932 by Haven Gillespie and J. Fred Coots. They had trouble convincing anyone to produce it because it was seen as a kids' song, which would have been very hard to sell. The big break came when Eddie Cantor sang it on his radio show in 1934, and the song became an instant hit.

Winter Wonderland -

Although this song is associated with Christmas, there is no mention of the holiday in the lyrics. The song was originally recorded by Richard Himber and his Orchestra at the end of a recording session when they found some time to spare and it was suggested that this new tune be tried. Among his orchestra was a young clarinetist, Artie Shaw, who was doing some studio work to support himself while he caught up on his formal education.

I'm for decency -- period. I'm for anything and everything that bodes love and consideration for my fellow man. But when lip service to some mysterious deity permits bestiality on Wednesday and absolution on Sunday -- cash me out.

Fragapanophobia –

an irrational fear of bad experiences involving or taking place during birthday.

Just because it's SOS' birthday had no bearing on her being our third guest programmer today, (I couldn't take the constant pestering about how unfair it was that it wasn't her turn yet.)

So take it away birthday girl -

Baby, It's Cold Outside  Leon Redbone and Zooey Deschanel -

Once again I am stumped that my daughters love this song, it keeps making their lists.

Sleigh ride  Fun -

According to ASCAP, this was the most-played holiday song on American radio from 2009-2012, beating out Winter Wonderland.

Carol of The Bells  Trans-Siberian Orchestra -

The internet meme Ding! Fries Are Done is the anthem of a Burger King worker named Billy set to the tune of Carol of the Bells. It originated in 1993 on the mysterious singer's cassette album A Very Spastic Christmas and gained attention the following year on the Dr. Demento radio show.

Feliz Navidad  Jose Feliciano -

This bilingual holiday classic comprises a simple English verse with a Spanish chorus, "Feliz Navidad, próspero año y felicidad" that translates as "Merry Christmas, a prosperous year and happiness." The song's composer, Puerto Rican singer-songwriter José Feliciano, told Billboard magazine: "If I had left in Spanish only, then I knew the English stations might not play it, so I decided to write an English lyric, 'I want to wish you a merry Christmas.' And then there was no way the stations could lock that song out of the programming."

Mistletoe  Justin Bieber -

The origin of the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe is obscure. The most likely explanation is that either the custom stemmed from the association of the plant in Dark Ages Europe with Freya, the Nordic goddess of love and beauty, or it could have come from the ancient belief that mistletoe symbolizes fertility.
