Happy Cultural Imperialism Day

October 12, 1792 -
Columbus Day was first celebrated in the US (in NYC) on this date.

This first celebration occurred on the 300th anniversary of Columbus' arrival. The day didn't become a federal holiday until 1934.

October 12, 1892 -
The Pledge of Allegiance, written by Francis Bellamy, was recited in US schools for the first time on this date.

The pledge was recited to honor the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the New World (also coinciding with the opening of the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois.)
