The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (282)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1939 Naughty Neighbors, (co-starring Porky Pig,) directed by Bob Clampett.

(Sorry, I could only find a colorized version.)

This is the final appearance of Petunia Pig in the Golden Age of American Animation. Petunia is mentioned in two later cartoons Porky Pig's Feat and Dumb Patrol. Coincidentally, both cartoons feature Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig together, with both Bugs and Porky taking cameos in each other's cartoons.

Before the start of our feature presentation, ACME Eagle Hand Soap would like you to join us in thinking about our younger days with a bunch of ukulele playing Brits -

Would loved to have heard the Bee Gees sing this, backed by The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is the 1959 iconic classic, North by Northwest, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, Leo G. Carroll, and Martin Landau. North by Northwest was the first film Hitchcock made with M-G-M. While North by Northwest has become one of the popular of Hitchcock thrillers, fans of the film enjoy pointing out the glaring gaffe in the scene where Eve shoots Roger, of a little boy extra seated in the cafeteria who covers his ears before the shots are fired. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching this very funny film, North by Northwest. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.

The final chase scene was not shot on Mount Rushmore; Hitchcock couldn't gain permission to shoot an attempted murder on a national monument. The scene was shot in the studio on a replica of Mount Rushmore. Everything is shot carefully, so as to avoid associating the faces of the monument with the violence. Hitchcock couldn't get permission to film inside the U.N., so footage was made of the interior of the building using a hidden camera, and the rooms were later recreated on a sound stage.

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (281)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1939 Wise Quacks, (co-starring Porky Pig,) directed by Bob Clampett.

This was the final cartoon to use the 1938-39 Looney Tunes logo and the original 1937-39 Porky Pig drum ending before it was redesigned, beginning with Porky's Hotel.

Before the start of our feature presentation, ACME Eagle Hand Soap would like to present a simple proposal about changing the work week -

I believe Stephen Fry is one of the most articulate sentient beings roaming the earth at the moment.

We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is the 1959 comedy classic, Some Like It Hot (I'm glad we're finally showing a comedy this week,) directed by Billy Wilder and starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, George Raft, Pat O'Brien, and Joe E. Brown. The plot for Some Like It Hot was taken from a 1951 German film, Fanfaren das Liebe, written by Robert Thoeren and M. Logan. While Wilder wanted Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon for the male leads, UA executives suggested 'more bankable' stars like Frank Sinatra, Danny Kaye and Anthony Perkins. Marilyn Monroe was only secured after she was guaranteed 10% of the gross. The film marked the first of seven films that Lemmon would make with Wilder between 1959-1981 The film has gone on to become one of the highest regarded comedies of all time and Brown's closing line is one of Hollywood's most iconic moments. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching this very funny film, Some Like It Hot. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.

A preview audience laughed so hard in the scene where Jack Lemmon announces his engagement that a lot of the dialogue was missed. It had to be re-shot with pauses (and the maraca gimmick) added.

Psst, before you go - watch this documentary on Brian Wilson before it is taken down -

Besides being a good documentary about Brian Wilson, it's very frank about his struggles with mental illness (dealt with is a sensitive manner.)

The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour (280)

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Looney Tunes cartoon, the 1939 Scalp Trouble, (co-starring Porky Pig,) directed by Bob Clampett.

Currently, this cartoon doesn't air on American television anymore due to heavy Native American stereotyping.

Before our feature presentation, The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching this wonderful mash-ups created from various movie musicals -

If you check out the youtube link, you can find a list of the movies used.

We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is 1958 horror classic, Dracula (aka Horror of Dracula,) starring Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Michael Gough, and Melissa Stribling. This was the first in the series of Hammer Horror films starring Christopher Lee as Count Dracula. In the United States the title was changed to Horror of Dracula to avoid confusion with the classic 1931 version. This was a real concern since the Bela Lugosi version was still being booked into theatres until the Shock Theatre package of classic Universal horror films was released to television. Considered extreme for its day (the film was originally rated FOR ADULT'S ONLY in Britain,) it now seems relatively PG by today's standards, the film's stylishness remains undiminished. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching, Dracula, perhaps with the lights on. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.

Christopher Lee would go on to reprise the role in six of the eight Dracula sequels including, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen from the Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Scars of Dracula, Dracula A.D. 1972 and The Satanic Rites of Dracula. Peter Cushing would reprise the role of Professor Van Helsing in the 1960's Brides of Dracula.

Thank you for joining us today

Before our feature presentation, ACME would like to start the evening with another Daffy Duck Merrie Melodies cartoon, the 1939 Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur, directed by Chuck Jones.

It was the first Daffy Duck cartoon to be directed by Chuck Jones. This cartoon premiered with Dark Victory.

Before our feature presentation, The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like to posté sans commentaire

The internet never blinks and never forgets

We've picked another entry from the excellent reference book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. Today's film is Jacques Tati's 1958 comedy Mon Oncle (My Uncle,) starring Jacques Tati, Jean-Pierre Zola, Adrienne Servantie and Alain Bécourt. This is Tati's first color film and Mon Oncle is halfway a silent film. Widely considered to be Jacques Tati's masterpiece, this film was also his most widely distributed and widely seen film, due in large part to its having won the Academy Award as Best Foreign Film. Besides being an apparent social commentary about the conflict between new and old, Mon Oncle is a delicately heartrending story about family bonds. The ACME Eagle Hand Soap Radio Hour would like you to join us in watching this charming comedy, Mon Oncle. So push away from the table, get comfortable and enjoy the film.

Having been awarded the Oscar for Best Foreign Film for this film, Jacques Tati was invited to a state reception where he was introduced to French President Charles de Gaulle. As a joke and as a reference to the film, Minister of Culture André Malraux introduced him as "mon oncle". De Gaulle, not realizing who the director was or what film he had made, congratulated him on having a talented nephew.
